John O'Brien, pen name of Father Patrick Joseph Hartigan 1879-1952 (born 13th October 1878 and died 27th December 1952) was a famous Australian Catholic priest, educator, author and poet. His poetry was very popular in Australia and was well received in Ireland and the United States. Hartigan wrote under the pseudonym "John O'Brien". His verse celebrated the lives and mores of the outback pastoral folk he ministered as a priest to the southern New South Wales and Riverina towns of Thurgoona, Berrigan and Narrandera, in the first two decades of the 20th century.
His poems included "The Little Irish Mother", "Said Hanrahan", "The Old Mass Shandrydan" and his most famous poem " Around The Boree Log". His poems were an instant success. Around the Boree Log ran to five editions and 18,000 copies by 1926, was widely popularised throughout eastern Australia by the recitations of John Byrne, acclaimed in Ireland and the USA and made into a film in 1925.
The refrain We'll all be rooned from his poem "Said Hanrahan" has entered colloquial Australian English as a jocular response to any prediction of dire consequences arising, particularly, from events outside one's control. Boree is the aboriginal name for the Weeping Myall - the best firewood in Australia except for Gidgee. A John O'Brien Festival is held annually in Narrandera, NSW.
