There are outcrops of tertiary basalt, aged between 22 to 24 million years, part of the widespread volcanic activity in parts of Australia in north eastern NSW and south eastern Queensland which produced many well known volcanic features. The fresh basalt appears dark in colour due to its mineral content.
The lava formed vertically-jointed columns through contraction due to cooling while stationary, rather than flowing. The joints or cracks are exposed as the outlines of mostly 6 sided columns, but some appear to have 3, 4, 5 and 7 sides.
Similar columns also occur in basalt at Burleigh Head, south eastern Queensland, where large columnar blocks have tumbled downslope to the sea and are being broken up into rounded boulders by wave action. The columns of rhyolite at the Glasshouse Mountains and Mt French, Queensland and of dolerite at Cradle Mountain, Tasmania are also similar in origin and form.
