Bear Kodiak Recurve 60in Description

The legendary '59 Bear Kodiak spawns tales of trudging through the harsh Alaskan wetland ecosystems in search of one of the most dangerous predators on the face of the planet. The Kodiak Brown Bear symbolises power, agility, strength and toughness like no other animal. When Fred Bear went to Alaska, India and Africa in search of the most dangerous game animals, more often than not, there was a Kodiak in his hand.

You too can be a part of that tradition. The Bear Kodiak recurve is just as comfortable chasing deer through the bush or targets on the range. First and foremost the Kodiak is a shooter. If you are looking for a no compromises bow you can really trust in the field, this is the one. The Kodiak is 60" of pure shooting performance. There just isn't another bow like it.

The Kodiak. A functional work of art. Modelled after the famous '59 Kodiak.

80 Years ago a man named Fred Bear made a decision that would have a profound impact on all our lives, he founded The Bear Archery Products Company. Fred was a visionary, a leader and father figure to generations of bowhunters that soon followed his path and learned of the many rewards that Mother Nature has to offer.

Mr Bear's presence is amongst us today and is evident in the bows that are still handcrafted using the same presses and designs that Fred came up with so many years ago.

Here's to you Papa Bear. Everyone thanks you for the last 80 years and thank you for your spirit, your vision, guidance and for sharing a passion that dwells in all of us today. Until we meet again. Happy hunting to all from Bear Archery.

The Return of the Legend.

Ask around about Bear bows and you'll surely hear tales of the legendary 59 Bear Kodiak, modelled after the famous 1959 bow that helped bring Mr Bear to international fame. Throughout the years, Bear has been asked time and again to "bring it back".

Out of respect, they were convinced the 59 Kodiak could never and would never, be duplicated, but modern technology has finally advanced to the point that it has become possible. But, like Mr Bear himself, they believe in giving people what they want. So it is with pride and honour that Bear offer the Bear Kodiak, inspired by and modelled after the justly famous 59 Kodiak.

The superior build quality I-Beam is constructed of a classic look Shedua Riser and Grayling Green fibreglass.

The legendary feel and function of the acclaimed Kodiak bow with a flat satin burnish instead of the traditional gloss finish. If you prefer a time honoured bow with a low sheen lustre, the Kodiak satin is just what you're looking for.

The limbs are fashioned with action maple laminate cores, faced with Grayling Green glass and skillfully backed radiused for precision shooting.

The tips are layered with high-strength Grayling Green fibreglass and hand finished to accommodate modern bow strings.

Finally the grip is capped on the back with brown fibreglass accents to give a beautiful contrast against the wood of the bow and then wrapped with a supple leather grip.

The Kodiak is the bow all other bows are measured by. This bow is built to order.

The Fred Bear Way. A tie to history, a reverence for nature and respect for wild things form the soul of the bowhunter. Lacking these, he's just pulling strings.

The Fred Bear Way. Every hunter is a born liar as well as an athlete, because the adventurous spirit is never satisfied with the way things are.

This is what people had to say about the Bear Kodiak.

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. "This bow is very fast and accurate. Am glad I purchased it." From Buck of Vinita, Oklahoma, USA

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. "I have been wanting to get a remake of the 59 Kodiak ever since they hit the market. I finally purchased one a few weeks ago and was excited for it to arrive. When I took it out and held it for the first time, I was overwhelmed with the fit & finish on the Kodiak. For a production bow I don't know how you could want more. I have several custom bows and I will be proud to hang the Kodiak on the wall beside them. I bought a 45lb Kodiak and was amazed at how quick and accurate it is. It actually seems to shoot an arrow like a 50lb bow. It has great power built into it and shoots an arrow with authority. It is very smooth to draw and has no stacking at my 27.5 inch draw and it hits where you look. I am shooting Easton 1916 Legacy arrows out of my 45lb Kodiak and they shoot like darts. I had no issue at all tuning this bow. Bear has really done a good job on the 59 Kodiak & if anyone is a Bear Archery fan, this is a must have bow. The only down side is that it is so nice looking that you might hesitate taking it out hunting. I hope to put mine to good use this hunting season." From Uncle Ron of Mercer, Pennsylvania, USA

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. "This bow is everything a true custom should be. It is good value and does everything you want in a bow. I hunt and shoot as often as I can and this bow is truly a pleasure." From Blue of Coweta, Oklahoma, USA

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. "To start, the pictures and videos you may see of this bow just don't do it justice. Out of the box I was stunned by how well made and good looking the Kodiak was. Out of the recurves I own, this bow has the smoothest draw and feels absolutely astounding in the hook of my thumb and palm. I plan on using this as my main bow to hunt and practice. I am inseparable." From Alex the Keen of Texas, USA

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. "I love Bear products and this is my 1st high end traditional bow. The performance is exceptional, but the craftsmanship and appearance are just as pleasing. I feel almost guilty shooting it because it's so pretty. Light, agile and easy to handle. It comes up on target well. It feels rigid like a longbow, but it has all the advantages of a recurve. I'm very happy I made the choice to invest." From Kevin of Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. "I'm really glad to see that Bear Archery has re-introduced this bow. It's every bit a classic now as it was originally. I purchased mine for bowhunting along with field & stump shooting. At first I wasn't sure which poundage to settle on and eventually chose the 55# model. It was the right choice for me. I'm not over bowed. This bow is smooth, no stack, quiet with otter fur and shoots with power. I really like the leather grip and feather rest. The finish is elegant. It's in between my 43# Kodiak Hunter and my 65# Kodiak Magnum. I shoot full length 31.5" 400 spine shafts at 28" draw with 50 grain brass inserts and 145 grain heads up front, giving me plenty of FOC weight. On the back I use 5" shield cut feathers with cap wraps. This combination paper tuned sweetly, so no changes needed. Keep up the great work at Bear Archery." From Non-Typical Rich of Southampton, New York, USA

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. "1959 Kodiak is the best hunting bow I have ever owned. It shoots where you look and point. Fred Bear's design is timeless, the beauty is beyond comparison and it is flawless. As a hunting bow it's great 60" of smooth drawing incredibly fast shooting bow. Mine is 55lbs @ 28", it's quiet and the grip is awesome, fitting into my hand perfectly. The bow is the best of both worlds. It's as forgiving as a long bow, but as smooth and fast as a recurve bow. Another plus is it comes with a feather rest which in my opinion is the best rest you can have on a bow. You get incredible arrow flight without drag. It's also very quiet. It has become my favourite bow just as it was Papa Bear's and my Father's. I love it. Thank you Bear Archery for giving me the opportunity to own the bow of my legendery hero Fred Bear, as I grew up idolising." From Tinman23126 of Mira Loma, California, USA

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. "One word to describe this bow and that is Great. This bow will be another one that Bear people will be talking about years after. I will be getting another one soon. Two is better than one. Thanks Bear." From Keith, a competitive archer of McDonough, Georgia, USA

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. "I really don't know where to start with this. I would first say I've never purchased a recurve from any major manufacturing company before this one. Throughout my many years of traditional hunting and shooting, I've always stayed with custom built bows, no matter the price. My father, however, loved Bear bows. He had two that fed our family for many years; one being a first run Kodiak. Upon the re-introduction of the great '59, seeing it took me back to hunting with dad. I purchased the bow as a novelty more than anything else. That was until I shot it. This bow is fantastic. I was really impressed with the slim lines, balance and weight. Superb yet simple craftsmanship. I put the bow to use the day it arrived. Incredibly smooth drawing, it shoots exactly where you point and bolsters a somewhat forgiving side for that subtle drop in your bow arm or pluck of the release. This bow has definitely sold me on the feather rest as well. Wow; all my years never used one but it is extremely functional. I am very, very impressed with this bow. It's also absolutely beautiful. In my personal opinion, if you're on the fence with this bow, don't be. It is a fine purchase and a great performer." From Roper of Montana, USA

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. "It looks slicker than heck. I'm thinkin' it's 'bout the finest lookin' bow I've seen from Bear. Well I got it home and after shootin' it, I can say it shoots as good as it looks. I put some felt on the string contact points with a little beaver fur and even with a 500 and just 125 up front it's flat out quite and fast. I really can't think of any bow I would pick over this one. I'm proud of it and I know Fred would be." From Gurn of South East Michigan, USA

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. "A truly beautiful bow from tip to tip. At 40lb, it zips a 1916 arrow with a 125 point with authority, zero hand shock and it is very quiet even with the factory string. Bear finally got it right with this bow. I think Fred would be proud. Can't wait to hit the woods next Fall and I won't feel under gunned even at 40lb" From Col Buca of Methuen, Massachusetts, USA

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. "I've been collecting and buying vintage Bear bows for some time and have a '59 Kodiak. When this bow came out in the Bear catalogue and I immediately placed an order. In less than a week I had my bow. My first impression was that it was lighter and more sleek than the original but very well balanced. The craftsmanship is outstanding. From tip to tip, this is a well finished product. The wood leather-covered grip felt like it was sculpted to fit my hand and the lightweight and balance of the strung bow was noteworthy. I'm currently shooting Black Widow and Tomahawk longbows and this Kodiak will hang with them both in terms of looks and smooth shooting. The only negative was the string noise before I got it tuned out. It appears to like arrows in the 10 grain per pound range for quietness. I was shooting 400 grain 500 spine carbon shafts at about 44lb at 29.5 inches and it quieted down when I switched to a 1916 heavier aluminium. I was using beaver strip silencers, which I suspect need to be changed to a different type. The bow was so accurate that I was not worried about getting more of the sound out for now. For some unexplained reason, I like shooting this bow more than my more expensive ones. I am planning on making it my #1 bow for 3D competitions this Spring. This review was more about how the bow feels in hand and I'm sure someone will post a more technical report soon. This bow works perfect for me." From Tom of Abilene, Texas, USA
